REST IN DESIGN: HOTEL:
ARTIS HOUSE
Design brief
Design a hotel on the site of Arnolfini in Bristol.
Design a hotel room exploring furnitecture
My concept:
My concept derives from trading in the 19th century, with close attention to the goods that were traded to and from Bristol. These exotic goods were valued as luxury items, and they weren’t available in Britain; with high demands, they had cultural connections and were associated with wealth.
The inspiration for the hotel design derives from the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan Van Eyck. The painting presents Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, a merchant of trade, standing with his wife in their home in Bruges; the scene depicts signs of wealth and luxury through its material choice and interiors.
The hotel demographic considers leisure and culture tourists, aged 30-40 who have a disposable income.
The name of the hotel is 'Artis House', which in Latin translates to trade. Artis House is a luxury hotel, providing a boutique style layout with large rooms; rich trade inspired materials have been applied throughout the hotel, and are celebrated through the journey to the hotel rooms.
